This is how Rafi Barnaz, City Council member ensured the closer of the new Bat Yam stadium on Shabbos: The city had decided to demolish the old stadium which had been used on Shabbos and to build a new one, Bechadrey found out.

Construction of a new stadium came up for approval by the City Council, which by a majority vote concurred that it would be closed on Shabbos, following Barnaz’ lobbying. A Meretz Council member voted against Shabbos closure, while a Bayit Yehudi member abstained.

The tender was won by Amir Kabiri, a businessman, owner of the Hapoel Tel Aviv team. He had no idea that he was going to become the first person in the world to build a shomer Shabbos stadium, but at the end, was convinced.
