In mid Iyar: Satmar Rebbe went out for Birkas Hailanos

Satmar has become Amshinov? Probably not. But yesterday (Sunday) afternoon the Satmar Rebbe was seen in Kiryat Yoel making birkas hailanos, almost two weeks after the advent of the month of Iyar. The reason – clearly halachic.

The pages of images of rabbis on haredi sites, newspapers, magazines and journals of the month of Nisan, are filled with photographs of this month's atmosphere, which is eventful mainly with Mitzvos relating to Nissan. Starting from birkas hailanos, continuing with all the baking processes of matzos, as well as the aliya laregel, prayer at the Western Wall, the end of Yom Tov and mutual visits of Gedolei Yisroel.

But while most occasions are more or less focused around the month to which they were relevant, the photographs of Gedolei Yisroel with birkas hailanos, are spread over one whole month, starting from those who are quick on the first day of the month, to say the once a year blessing, to those who are waiting for various reasons to the last minute at the end of the month.

It is generally believed that when Nissan has passed, there was no more pictures of blossoming fruit trees when at the background a Gadol is seen making the brocha. "Today is the last day you can bench" – it is customary to say in public.

But just yesterday afternoon, almost in the middle of the month of Iyar, the Satmar Rebbe went out to make the blessing of trees in Kiryat Yoel, and refuted by the tradition that took root among many. These trees began to blossom and bloom only in the last few days, and the Rebbe is biding his time to bench lemehadrin, beshem umalchus.

"Many err in halacha," the Rebbe explained ahead to his associates, "and believe that somehow, the time of blessing is only in Nissan. Yet this is not true according to the Shulchan Aruch. The brocha with shem umalchus is allowed, as usual, during all the flowering time, until the moment when the tree yields fruit and they germinate and are seen on it. The source for those who believe it is not allowed to bench in the month of Iyar, is according to the Kabbala only, which indicates that one should not bench beshem umalchus after the month of Nissan. However, in practice, when the trees start flourishing at us just now, certainly one can bench behidur, beshem umalchus."
