Speaker of the House Paul Ryan struggled to bring the House of order Wednesday as Democrats intent on pushing a gun bill continued to stage a sit in on the House floor for over 10 hours.

This was a radical break from the normal orderly conduct of the House. Republicans planned to push through a bill to address the Zika outbreak and then attempt to adjourn the House until after July 4 in order to shut down the rowdy Democrats. The Democrats denounced the Republican's plan as "cowardly".

Democrats said they were going to stay until Republicans gave in to their demands- they wanted to hold votes on bills to strengthen background checks and prevent black listed individuals from getting guns in response to the massacre in Orlando.
A number of lawmakers brought pillows blankets and food as the protest stretched toward midnight.

Ryan said the protest was, "nothing more than a publicity stunt." He made it clear that the House would not vote on legislation that would, "take away a citizen's constitutional rights without due process."
